Teams Pair Up For Baseball Tournaments

Tournament pairings are set for Spokane Valley Baseball’s end-of-season tournaments.

The playoffs, doubleelimination for the Giants League and single-elimination for Midgets and PeeWees, begin next week.

The first three Giants games are on Monday with the second-place Bowdish Hornets hosting Valley View Conoco/Dr. Belknap (Horizon), third-place Autocraft (Greenacres) at home against Grocery Outlet (Centennial) and the co-fourth place teams Norm’s Burger Barn and Spokane Valley Firefighters playing at Evergreen Junior High.

That winner advances against season champion Skipper Bill’s on Wednesday.

Skipper Bill’s and Hornets split their season-ending series. The regular season champs won 12-2 to clinch on the pitching of Nick Nelson. He pitched four shutout innings strking out seven and facing just two batters over the minimum.

Robert Shea and Anthony Morgan were both 3-for-4.

Hornets salvaged the season finale 5-4, turning a triple play with runners at first and third. Earlier, Skipper Bill’s beat Grocery Outlet, Shea again 3-for-4, while T-Bone Henderson and Matt Johnston each had four hits.

Norm’s Burger Barn beat Valley Firefighters 8-1 in a preview of their matchup and also won 12-10 over third-place Autocraft in their season finale.

First round of the Midget Tournament is Tuesday with three games. First Choice Health Care was in first place with one game remaining by outscoring three recent opponents 45-5.

In two outings, pitcher Gerry Schumacher struck out 14 without allowing a run in six innings. Ryan Campbell hit a 2-run triple and Michael Stewart a two-run homer against Olympic Sports. Stewart and Caleb Alvarado each had three runs batted in against Architectural Ventures.

Six teams have three or fewer losses, including Sterling Self Storage and Henderson Roofing with two each.

Yogi Bear’s Campground finished an 11-0-1 seson and is favored in the Pee Wee tournament which begins Monday.

Four other teams had two losses each and if season-long scores are an indication, the tourney is anybody’s guess.

Championship games for all three leagues will be July 29 at Central Valley High School.

Hooop It Up next weekend

The annual Hooop It Up 3-on-3 basketball tournament, sponsored by the Spokane Valley YMCA, is next Saturday and Sunday at the Valley Mall.

Packet pickup for divisions beginning in grade three through adult categories is Friday at Center Court inside the Mall from 2 to 9 p.m.

It is the third year at the Valley Mall.

Golfers play two tourneys

Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Club golfers participated in two tournaments, monthly Liberty Cup and first round of the President’s Cup competition.

Overall winner of the Liberty Cup for July was Sandy Mooney with a net 70.

During concurrent putting competition, Billie Etter and Jackie Shea won A flight with 27, one fewer than Jill Grover. Dorothy Womach won B flight with 29.

C winner was Noreen Sale with 28 putts, while Myrna Neubauer and Cec Schucker tied in D flight 33.

Leading first round of the President’s Cup is Reiko Takamori with net 69. Other flight leaders were Mooney at 70 in A flight, Cathy Whitley with 72 in B, Marion Jordan with 73 in C and Schucker with 75 in D. June eclectic leaders were Keri Barham with low gross 75 in A flight and Etter with a net 61. In B, Nancy Monteith shot 84 and Carol Arnot netted 62.

C leaders were Jordan with gross 86, Sale and Lois Lee with net 63. Tied in D were Jan Hussey and Coleen Wisenor with low gross 96, Jane Mackelvie and Ethel Rankin with low net 63.

Christmas in July

Valley View Ladies Club golfers had their annual Christmas in July ornament exchange and best ball tournament.

The winning team featured a net 12-1/2 by Lu Benjamin, Joanne Moore, Kathy Bymers and Florence Keller.

During recent medal play Dee Elder shot low gross 44 that paced A flight golfers.

Benjamin and Sue Matsui shot 51 in B and Angie Schauer had 62 in D. Net winners were Lorraine Martin with 29 in A, Bymers and Marian McLellan with 30 in B. Four were tied at 34 in C, including Carol Townsend and Florence Kller who had chip-ins. They were joined at low net by Kay Pritzl and Carol Deal.

Marge Bratcher also had a chip-in.

Painted Hills competition

During weekly Painted Hills Ladies Club medal play, Carla Stendin led the way with a 45, thanks to a birdie on the 15th hole.

Other flight leaders were Joyce Jacobs with 54 in B, Theresa Zacher with 58 in C and Debbie Culbertson with 61 in D. No-handicap leader was Leann Dunning with 54.

Net leaders were Lori Gray in A flight with 33, Shawna Ferguson in B with 37, Darlene Hurliman in C with 36 and Emma Long in D with 32.

Rita Loncon had a chip-in on 16.
