Council May Decide On Downtown District
The City Council may decide Wednesday whether to form a Business Improvement District for downtown Sandpoint.
The district would tax downtown businesses to pay for such amenities as parking spaces, decorative improvements, promotion of public events downtown and general promotion of retail activities downtown.
The city is holding a public hearing Wednesday at the request of the Downtown Sandpoint Business Association, which presented a petition requesting the BID last month.
The total assessment to be collected under the taxing district would be $107,215, with individual businesses paying from $10 to $65 a month depending on square footage.
The public hearing is scheduled during the City Council meeting, which starts at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers. Also on the agenda is the appointment of a new fire chief.
