The city is trying to find a way to combat a benign bacteria in Well No. 7, which provides one-quarter of the city’s drinking water. The bacteria, harmless to humans, are clogging the screens 800 feet below the surface. The pump itself is in danger of breaking down due to the bacteria. The city will pump 400 fewer gallons per minute until a solution is found.

Grand Coulee’s water woes may just be beginning. The town has approached Electric City about the possibility of buying water, since its own water doesn’t meet federal standards. Parking, or a shortage of it, has become a major issue in Colville. At a recent meeting, the city’s Parking Commission aired its grievances, as well as its future plans. The primary problem, commission members say, is they lack the authority and funds to negotiate leases for new lots or to purchase property. Without this authority, the commission feels it should disband. The city Planning Commission and Chamber of Commerce support the Parking Commission’s position.
