Elston Moves Into Second At Ajga Event
Spokane’s Lani Elston shot a second-round 75 on Wednesday and is in second place heading into to- day’s final round of the American Junior Golf Association’s Compaq Junior Championship at the par-72 Trophy Lake Golf Club in Port Orchard, Wash.
Elston is at 151, seven strokes behind leader Erica Blasberg, from Corona, Calif.
In the boys division, Pasco’s Greggory Lavoie shot a 72 for a 36-hole total of 143, three strokes ahead of his nearest competitor.
Spokane’s Sarah Bassett scored a final-round 73 to win the girls 15-17 title in the 2000 PGA Junior Series at Manito Golf and Country Club. Her 54-hole total of 222 was one better than Federal Way’s Katie Street.
Craig Leslie, also of Spokane, won the boys 13-14 division by seven strokes with a 217.
Basketball
The Spokane Stars Elite edged West Texas 69-65 but then fell to Puget Sound 64-48 in the girls BCI Open National Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Stars Elite will play Arkansas at 11:30 this morning, with the winner advancing to the finals against Puget sound.
Central Valley’s Rae Jewell scored 29 points in the win over West Texas, while Juliann Keller, from Malta, Mont., scored 16 points in the loss to Puget Sound.
In the U-14 division, the Stars thumped Arkansas 61-36 and West Texas 60-47 to advance to today’s finals against either Oregon or West Texas.
The Eastern Washington Elite boys finished with a 4-1 record in the high school open division of a Las Vegas tournament that drew 312 teams for all divisions.
After going 3-0 in pool play, Elite defeated Friends of Hoops (Seattle) 55-46 with Colin Floyd scoring 17 points, before being eliminated by BWBA California 69-61.
Baseball
Seth Gemar scattered three hits and struck out eight in the opener and Chris Rodgers backed Chad Mathison’s five-hit pitching in the second game as the Valley Cannons swept Pullman 6-4, 5-2 at Jackson Field to capture their three-game series in the Senior American Legion playoffs.
Details of the playoff game between the Silver Lanes Bandits and the Northstars were not reported.
In Junior American Legion loser-out playoff games, Mark Frieske struck out 15 and allowed only four hits in pitching the Spokane Storm past B&C Dix 84; West Valley edged Cheney 2-1 on some splendid sixth-inning relief work by Eric Roethle; Whitman County got a runscoring triple from Jeff Pittman and a sacrifice fly from Greg Biagi to beat Pullman 2-0; and the Panorama Twins thundered Hallmark 20-8.
Softball
The Spokane Sliders and Spokane Valley Villains are among 26 teams entered in the 18-U girls fastpitch A regional Friday through Sunday at Franklin Park.
Teams from Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon are playing for two berths to the national tournament, Aug. 9-13 in Normal, Ill.
