Good Neighbor Deadline Extended
Last year, we had over 130 nominations. This year we’ve only reached a fraction of that amount, so we’re extending the deadline.
Our mail boxes still aren’t stuffed with Good Neighbor nominations, so it’s time to make a deal.
We’ll push the contest deadline back by two weeks as long as you promise to write us a winning letter about your neighbor.
Last year, we had more than 130 nominations. This year we’ve only reached a fraction of that amount, so we’re extending the deadline to Aug. 8.
But please don’t leave us hanging. Fulfill your part of the bargain by sending your entry well before the new deadline.
Then we’ll be reassured that there are still people to be proud of in our Spokane neighborhoods.
Entering the contest is easy. Just write us a few paragraphs about someone in your neighborhood who surprises you with their kindness. Write about one page, double-spaced, with lots of examples illustrating how they stand out.
Perhaps your neighbor is thoughtful. Did he bring you a bouquet of flowers from his garden on your anniversary?
Or maybe your neighbors are resourceful. They have the best snowplow on the block and figure it’s just as easy for them to plow everyone’s driveway.
Or, it could be that your good neighbor is very careful. She watches your house when you’re out of town and has even scared away a prowler or two.
Whatever the case, remember that we’re looking for someone who has shown a sustained commitment to helping out those in the neighborhood. Someone who shows their kindness through good deeds, not just financial gifts.
If you have someone in mind but feel shy writing to us, consider calling up another neighbor to collaborate. Chances are the whole neighborhood could agree on a person who deserves the honor.
Also, if you’ve written to us in years past, please consider entering your neighbor in this year’s contest. We’ve had so many worthwhile entries in years past, and we’d love the opportunity to reconsider some of them.
From the entries, we’ll select a winner from the North Side, the South Side and the Valley. We’ll honor the neighbor with a plaque, a barbecue and a Voice cover story.
So don’t delay in sending in your nomination. We’re giving you two more weeks to set the record straight - there are plenty of good neighbors in our midst.
