Gte Wireless Networks Sold
GTE Wireless networks in Spokane and Seattle will be purchased by SBC Communications under an agreement expected to close during the third quarter.
Other Washington areas, as well as some markets in Texas, will also be included in the transaction, which was announced late last month.
Spokesman Kevin Belgrade said San Antonio-based SBC plans to combine its wireless operations with those of Bell South, which will create the second largest network in the U.S.
A brand for the new venture has not yet been determined, he said. Pending completion of the GTE acquisition, the franchises will continue to operate under their current names, he said.
The Department of Justice and Federal Communications Commission are reviewing the joint venture, which has already been approved by the European Union.
