Nader For Moratorium On Land Exchanges

From Staff Reports

Ralph Nader on Thursday called for a moratorium on federal land exchanges. Nader’s announcement came the day after more than 120 mostly environmental groups sent a letter to presidential candidates asking them to endorse land trade reforms.

A government report found land trades in the past decade sometimes failed to serve the public interest, often paying too much for private land while taking too little for public land.

Nader, a presidential candidate on the Green Party platform, also called for greater public access to the land exchange system, including an end to “the policy of closed-door appraisals.” He also sent a letter to his opponents, Vice President Al Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush, asking them to join him in calling for land exchange reform.
