Valley Baseball Tournaments Are Winding Up

Skipper Bill’s took the long way to get there, but the Giants League team became the third of the league’s regular season champions to make today’s finals of Spokane Valley Baseball championships.

The Giants, Midget and PeeWee League tournaments conclude today at Gonzaga University, beginning at 9 a.m.

Skipper Bill’s from East Valley, must win twice over Spokane Valley Firefighters. The Evergreen team was first to the finals with a 4-0 winner over Norm’s Burger Barn.

Tyler Luedtke and A.J. Gosney scattered seven hits with Luedtke striking out eight during the shutout. Steven Daschbach went 2-for 3.

Skipper Bill’s, relegated to the loser’s bracket in its first game, completed a three-game sweep to reach today’s 3 p.m. finals.

Anthony Morgan went 3-for-4, Nick Nelson 2-for-3 and Robert Shea 2-for-4, combining for eight runs batted in during an 11-8 win over Norm’s Burger Barn.

Earlier Nelson struck out 14 and Shea was 2-for-4 in a 6-3 victory over Horizon Pride and T-Bone Henderson went 3-for-4 in a 7-5 win over Autocraft.

Season leader 1st Choice Health Care from Trentwood won twice by a run to reach the Midget League finals. The team beat Schuck’s Auto Parts 9-8, rallying from a last-inning deficit and edged Grocery Outlet 4-3 to play Gibson’s Nursery at noon. Gibson’s was a 9-2 winner over rival Henderson Roofing in a game between Ponderosa players.

Walks resulting in three runs gave 1st Choice Health Care its win over Schuck’s. A sacrifice bunt by Caleb Alvarado produced the winning run in the fifth against Grocery Outlet.

Two big defensive plays by second-baseman Nathan Anyan saved the team. His relay home on an outfield base hit nailed a runner trying to score in the fifth. And he covered first on a hard smash to first baseman Justin Marlow to get the game’s final out.

Grocery Outlet had beaten Dr. James Psomas 16-2 earlier behind the pitching and hitting of Kevin Ehlert who had a three-run homer.

Season-long unbeaten Yogi Bear’s Campground got three innings of perfect pitching and a two-run triple by Tyler Olson to beat Tom’s Barber Shop 7-1 and reach the Pee Wee finals.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the team scored all seven runs, including an RBI hit by Jake Collins and three successful bunts.

The Liberty Lake team has allowed two or fewer runs in 14 of its 15 games.

It plays National Color Graphics in today’s 9 a.m. title game.

The Orchard Center team won 9-2 and 9-3 last week. During the tournament Jeremy Carey has gone 5-for-6 and fanned 16 batters in two games. Murphy McIntyre is 4-for-6 and Jeremy Fernandez had 12 strikeouts in two outings, allowing just three hits.

Chip-ins aplenty at Painted Hills Painted Hills Ladies Club golfers were on their short game last week.

There were six chip-ins, two by Mary Ann Smith on her way to a D flight leading net score of 31.

Others came from Betsy Duchesne, Caryl Marker, Cindee Corrick and Jenyce Thompson.

Low gross flight leaders were Stacey Johnston with 48 in A, Theresa Zacher with 52 in B, Krista Bighaus with 61 in C, and Diane Hutchens with 58 in D. No-handicap leader with 57 was Carolyn Sell.

Other net winners were Karen Goyins at 34 in A, Susan Crosby in B and Lynn Knight in C with 35s.

Takamori wins President’s Cup Reiko Takamori emerged as overall champion of the Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Club President’s Cup and putting competition.

Her low net total of 210 topped the field during three outings. Fewest putts were Dorothy Womach’s 88.

First flight winner was Jean Hatcher in a tie-breaker over Jill Grover. Both had net 214. Second Flight’s Caroline Arnot scored 218, a stroke better than Womach.

Winning third flight was Freda Beckman with 229, a stroke better than Mabel Watkins. Myrna Neubauer, with 227, won fourth flight by two shots over Coleen Wisenor.

Hanging Tree tournament winners

Louise Newtson, with a net total of 138, was overall winner of the Hangman Valley Ladies Club Hanging Tree golf tournament.

In a tie-breaker, Tammy Jensen won flight one over Alice Hamilton. Both had net 143.

Flight two went to Donna Ogilvie with 147. Runaway third flight winner was Ellen Boudewyns with 141. Sue Crosby won flight four with 152, one stroke better than Delores Bridwell.

The club also had a modified point tournament with eight points awarded and eagle, six for a birdie and four for a bogie.

Crosby won with 74 points overall, Kathy Thiesen shot 70, Janet Skaife and Dorothy Womach tied with 68.

Eclectic winners for June were Linda Begler with 72 and Fran Nord with net 58 in A flight; Ogilvie with 85 and Thiesen with 60 in B; Louise Robeson with 90 and Boudewyns with 62 in C; Crosby with 89 and Jan Pownell with 58 in D.

Valley View medal play

Weekly leaders for the Valley View Ladies Club are as follows.

Dee Elder shot 50 to lead A flight and Deanna Hauser netted 34.

Frieda Lemon and Genevra Barrett tied in B flight with 53. Edith Rains and Cathy Mileson tied for net with 33. In C it was Donna Liebergood with 62 and Florence Keller with 30.

Business as usual at Liberty Lake

It was business as usual for Liberty Lake Ladies 9-Hole Club golfers.

Low gross flight winners were Lorreine Martin with 53 in A, Mary Ann Barham with 56 in B, Linda Barry with 63 in C and Emma Long with 71 in D. Net winners were Marian Edwards with 37 in A flight, Mary Gehrman with 37 in B, Jean Skredsvig with 37 in C and Pam Yenter with 44 in D. Ruth Jenkins had a chip-in on the ninth hole.
