Burglary Suspects Arrested

A couple possibly connected to two recent Grant County burglaries were arrested in the Spokane Valley on Monday.

A sheriff’s deputy pulled over a red 1988 Chevrolet Camaro after noticing that the left brake light didn’t work.

The car was stopped near Broadway Avenue and Pines Road at 9:30 a.m.

The passenger, Tonya L. Sanders, 24, who gave a Spokane address, was arrested after a pistol was found in her possession. The gun matched the description of a pistol stolen in a Thursday burglary in the Quincy, Wash., area. She was charged with possession of a stolen firearm.

After questioning, deputies determined that the car’s driver, Stephen E. Harwood, 25, who also gave a Spokane address, had handed Sanders the firearm when they were stopped.

Harwood, who had three prior felony convictions, was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of stolen property.

According to a Grant County Sheriff’s Office press release, a red car matching the description of the one driven by Harwood was seen in the driveway of a house that was burglarized on Friday.

Grant County officials had already arrested two other people for the burglaries but as of Monday still hadn’t recovered one of the guns and some jewlery taken from the homes.

Two counts of residential burglary and firearm theft charges are pending against Harwood in Grant County, the press release said.
