Ferris High Teams Honored

Replay (Saturday, June 3, 2000): The Spokesman-Review has compiled all the Greater Spokane League All-Sports high school championships for 31 years. An article Friday incorrectly credited another newspaper.

Ferris High School is the winner of its third straight Greater Spokane League All-Sports Trophy, presented by the News Tribune of Tacoma.

The Saxons scored 204.5 points, riding first-place spring finishes in boys soccer and boys and girls golf to overtake Mead and Shadle Park.

Shadle was second with 187.8 points, up from sixth place a year ago. Mead, which had a strong fall with first places in girls soccer, boys cross country and girls basketball, was third with 186.5.

Overall, Ferris had eight first- or second-place finishes in the 18 GSL sports. The Highlanders, Panthers and Gonzaga Prep had six top-two finishes each.

For the first time in the history of the News Tribune’s statewide All-Sports championships, a Spokane school did not win. This year, the honor went to Eisenhower of Yakima at the 4A level.

Shadle won the first statewide award in 1987-88, Mead won nine years straight, and Ferris won the past two.

The highest GSL placer this year was Mead in fifth place. Ferris finished ninth, Shadle Park was 11th and University 12th.

In other classifications, St. John-Endicott won the Class B honor by 10 points over Ritzville with Garfield-Palouse five points further back in third. Valley Christian school finished fifth and Davenport was seventh.

Pullman was third, Lakeside ninth among 2A schools. Colfax finished 10th in 1A.

College baseball

Reliever John Veitch (7-1) pitched fourhit ball for 5-2/3 innings and catcher J.R. Diaz hit a three-run homer in the seventh, lifting host Lewis-Clark State into the championship round of the NAIA World Series at Lewiston with a 9-8 win over Indiana Tech.

The Warriors (58-12) will play Dallas Baptist (43-22-1) at 7 tonight for their first shot at the title. If Dallas Baptist wins, the teams will meet again Saturday to decide the championship.

Veitch relieved starter Mike Chavez in the fourth, with the bases loaded and two runs in. Although Indiana Tech (47-22) scored three more times to push its lead to 7-4, Veitch allowed just two more hits for the final five innings.

Men’s rowing

University of Washington’s I Varsity 8 and freshman 8 won their heats and advanced to the semifinals at the 98th annual National Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.

Washington’s II Varsity and Varsity 4 each finished second in their heats and will have to row today.

The I Varsity covered the 2,000-meter course in a time of 5 minutes, 44.81 seconds to win heat three, ahead of Dartmouth at 5:46.09.

Defending champion and No. 1-ranked California, undefeated this year, won the first heat in 5:42.90.

The Huskies freshman 8 crossed the line at 5:51.24, a length ahead of Cornell at 5:53.97.

Gonzaga’s varsity 4 completed its first heat in 6:44.68, then came back with a 6:57.84 in a second heat. Today, the team will aim for a spot in Saturday’s finals.

GU’s freshmen 4 finished its first-round heat in 6:43.91, just behind first-place Rutgers (6:42.07). The Bulldogs’ open 4 placed fifth in their first-round heat.

Baseball

The first all-state feeder game at Rogers High is at 4:30 p.m. today. Thursday’s edition incorrectly stated the first game was Thursday. The other three games in the series are Saturday, as reported.
