Delayed Reaction

Kathy Bula East Valley

The members of Delayed Reaction calls themselves a ministry-based, almost all-girl, Christian punk band.

The band includes junior Katie Arment on bass and vocals, freshman Adam Willmschen on lead guitar and vocals, and sophomore Dawn Starling on drums.

All three go to East Valley High School.

So far, all of their material is original. Their lyrics are loaded with references to their personal rebellion against worldly things and their firm belief that God’s love is for everyone.

But they do not consider themselves religious.

“It’s not about religion,” Willmschen said. “It’s about a relationship with Christ.”

The band has a strong sense of purpose and mission. They want to use their music to appeal to other young people and encourage them to explore Christianity, even if they feel rejected from churches they’ve attended in the past.

“We’re sick of persecution from legalistic churches,” Arment said.

Willmschen added that they are tired of people judging them for the way they look and dress.

“We’re just showing how Christ is for everyone, even for punks like us that have holes in their pants and don’t wear socks,” he said.

Ask them which musicians influenced them and be prepared for a lengthy list of Christian punk, hardcore and death metal groups, including bands such as Blaster the Rocketman, Squad Five-O and Pocket Change.
