Adams County Ritzville
On the farm tour calendar is the Ralston Field Day for no-till annual cropping Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Go 13 miles south of Ritzville on Highway 261, then three miles west on Providence Road. The WSU Lind Field Day will be June 15. Scientists and researchers will be on hand. The Adams County Variety Plot Tour will be June 27.
Ferry County Keller
The Martha S. ferry, which runs between Keller Ferry campground and the Colville Indian Reservation, will be out of service June 19-24 for routine Coast Guard inspection and maintenance. Travelers are asked to find alternate routes through Inchelium or Grand Coulee.
Grant County Moses Lake
To help vets with paperwork and other necessities, the county Veterans Association office will now travel north-central Washington. Loss of funding caused the change and president Mike Sallis says he’s been expecting this for some time.
Lincoln County Davenport
Sharla Stiles, who lives adjacent to the Stockland livestock exchange in Davenport, says she’s considering running a pig farm to show city leaders and business folks just how odiferous things can be in her neighborhood. Stiles says Stockland’s manure pile is a health issue both because of flies and the fact it sits over an aquifer.
Spokane County Spokane
Rogers High School senior Shea Haynes won a $4,000 scholarship from the Elks National Foundation. He will receive $1,000 a year for the 2000-2001 through 2003-2004 school years. Applicants for the financial awards were judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need. The foundation will award a total of $2.09million to 500 finalists.
Stevens County Colville
Police Chief Damond Meshishnek says there has been “quite a rash of break-ins” of cars the past three weeks and urges everyone to lock doors and take valuables out. Stereos, cassettes, CDs and checkbooks are favorite items of thieves. As thieves have been using smash-and-grab tactics on locked cars, he recommends parking in a locked garage or near a light where prowlers can be easily seen.
Whitman County Pullman
The Pullman Chamber of Commerce’s promotion for the National Lentil Festival begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn Express with a wine tasting and lentil hors d’oeurvres reception. The artwork for the 2000 poster will be unveiled. Arts and crafts booth space is available for the Aug. 25-26 festival, which usually draws 10,000 people to Pullman’s Reaney Park.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
The St. Maries High School Yearbook 2000 is available on disc or the traditional book. The Desktop Publishing class produced the disc which includes audio and video clips of sports events and the senior prom, and candid photographs of special events. The disc sells for $30. The 232-page, $45 annual is half articles and photographs about the community and the other half is the traditional high school yearbook/annual.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Pack River watershed landowners and river users discussed stabilizing the banks and reducing sediment with members of the Natural Resources Conservation Service, The Idaho Department of Lands, the Soil Conservation Commission and the Tri-State Water Quality Council last month at Northside Elementary School. The possibility of establishing an association will be discussed at 7 tonight at the school.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Property owners can expect to see their valuation or assessment estimating this year’s tax in the mail soon. The total value for the county is up slightly primarily due to new construction, according to the Assessor’s Office. The assessors encourage residents to review their notices and if they have questions to call (208) 267-3301 by June 23.
Kootenai County Post Falls
The Tough Kids Biathlon will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Stateline Stadium Speedway. Youths 5 to 12 years may participate in the biking and running event in which age determines distances. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the cost is $7. Call the Parks and Recreation Department at 773-0539. The annual Post Falls Duathalon set for 8 a.m. Sunday for anyone 12 and older will include two 5K runs and a 30K bike ride. Registration is $25 a person or $39 a team and is at 6 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.
Latah County Moscow
The Moscow four-member junior high and high school Future Problem Solver teams will travel to Athens, Ga., this week for an international competition. The two state champion teams will try to solve genetic engineering problems set 20 years in the future in two hours.
Shoshone County Wallace

Lincoln County Libby
City maintenance crews are encouraging the removal of grave decorations on the ground of the Libby City Cemetery by Thursday. The crews plan on mowing and the items hinder the process. Items not removed by Thursday will be disposed of by the city.
