The Summer Park and Food Program begins Monday. Combined with the Boys and Girls Club, the program aims to serve more than 200 children. A state study found that local children often went hungry when school food programs were not operating. Breakfast and lunch are offered, as are educational and other activities.

The recently released “Health Profile for Ferry County” shows the county leads the state in accidental deaths. Of 63 deaths in 1998, 12.7 percent were accidental - a 10 percent increase over 1997. The cancer death rate dropped from 25 percent to 14.3 percent. Overall, the number of deaths in 1998 dropped to 63 from 72 the year prior.

Graduating seniors from Lake Roosevelt High School heard from “elder statesmen” in the community during their senior oral boards. Seniors keep track of and write about all their classes and activities. Members of a citizens panel read them, then question the kids about their feelings and expectations for the future, often imparting advice to give graduates the big picture on life.

Odessa
Anglers throughout the state are invited to the upcoming Trout Fishing Derby at Pacific Lake. Hosted by the Odessa Lions Club, the derby features cash prizes for the largest trout and the most weight per limit. The fish-a-rama takes place June 17 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and costs $5 for those 15 and younger. Anglers 16 and up must pay $7 to cast. Pacific Lake is north of Odessa off Highway 21.

Davis Lake
A granular herbicide known as Navigate will be used to attack Eurasian milfoil in the waters here beginning Monday. Davis Lake Landholders Association members are fighting roughly three acres of the noxious and dangerous water weed. Money for the treatments comes from a $5,000 state grant.

The West Plains Chamber of Commerce is accepting donations for its yard sale fund-raiser this fall. Donations, which are tax deductible, can be dropped off at the chamber office, 201 First St., or at the Ben Franklin Store. The fund-raiser, scheduled for Aug. 4-5, will be held in the Ben Franklin parking lot.

Colville
Playworld, a maze of climbing, sliding and swinging fun, has made its debut at the Colville city park. Up to 42 kids at one time can take advantage of the brightly colored plastic gym, which is wheelchair-accessible. The structure sits over rubber tiles, which helps take the ouch out of impact when children fall. It’s taken more than 10 years of planning and fund raising to finish the project.

Neill Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Club begins Friday at noon. This year’s theme, “Read to the Future,” encourages readers to explore new worlds through summer leisure reading. The incentive-based program encourages each reader to set a goal, keep track of progress and then earn a prize when the goal is met. Readers who meet their goals are invited to a “Night Under the Stars” celebration later in the summer. Every Thursday at 3 p.m., the Summer Reading Club will hold a “Stop, Drop and Read” program where everyone in the library can read or listen to stories for 30 minutes. Glenda Bayley retired after 31 years of teaching at the high school in St. Maries. She began teaching two hours of accounting in 1969 with a provisional certificate, and earned her education degree from the University of Idaho in 1974. Bayley became a full-time business teacher and is now the adviser for the Business Professionals of America Club. Along with keeping up with the latest technology, she plans to travel with her husband to Australia and golf often.

“Landscape Trees for North Idaho,” the first of five classes in the Home Horticulture Workshop Series, will be presented from 7 to 9 tonight at the Bonner County Extension Office. Linden Maxwell, the Community Forest Coordinator and a certified arborist will teach the class, which is presented by the Bonner County Master Gardeners and Bonner County Cooperative Extension Office. The new postmaster, Brenda Duncan, will replace HCR addresses with city addresses for all rural route customers within city limits. Duncan said the change will speed up mail service. She also plans to refurbish the 62-year-old post office and re-establish communication with the public.

The Lake City Jaycees have organized the fireworks show over Lake Coeur d’Alene on the Fourth of July for more than 30 years, and count on community members and business donations to help buy the fireworks. A memorial was held Saturday at Robinson County Park, five miles east of Moscow, for former resident Darwin Vest. Vest disappeared in Idaho Falls a year ago, and a police search ended with no evidence found. Families and friends shared stories of his life as a movie house employee and expert on snake and spider venom.

Silver Valley Special Olympics athletes will compete in bowling and powerlifting events in the 2000 Special Olympics Idaho State Summer Games held Thursday through Saturday in Pocatello.
