The Bank of America Foundation awarded $166,667 to United Way of Spokane County for support of its “Success by 6” initiative.

The grant is part of $10 million being contributed to 109 United Way organizations across the country.

In Spokane, the grant will be used in a program called Parents as Teachers, which provides low-income parents with information and activities they can use in their homes to encourage language development, intellectual growth and social and motor skills. It will be used in collaboration with The Children’s Home Society of Washington.

The Parents as Teachers program translates the latest research findings into activities that give parents the “why” behind parenting suggestions, the foundation said in awarding the grant.
