The Adams County Public Works Department had nixed repair plans for the Lind-Hatton Road due to lack of funds, but the county received a windfall just last week. A portion of unused state funds was returned to the county, and the $212,073 may go toward the road.
Ferry County

The Prospector’s Day celebration runs from Friday through Sunday.
Logging events such as saw bucking and wrapper throwing are highlights. Also on the schedule are car races, soap box derby, fun run, parade, free entertainment, kiddie games, and food and craft booths.

Augusto Travino, 17, was shot and killed one year ago. Townsfolk got together to march against violence on the anniversary of his death. Police are still looking for the suspect.

The City Council has chosen school librarian and long-time resident Karen Carruth to replace council member Denise Hayes. Carruth was chosen from a field of three.
Pend Oreille County
Newport
Three teachers, Mike Meade and Stephanie Carlson of Newport schools, and Rey Villegas of Selkirk High School, were each awarded a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The trio will receive computer equipment and technology training. More than 145 teachers from the Spokane area received similar grants.

The Medical Lake School District is throwing a going away party for Superintendent Neal Powell, who takes over Snohomish School District July 1. The party is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. June 14 at the district administration office, W. 116 Third.

Colville
The Northeast Washington Genealogical Society’s “Little Journeys Around Town,” a compilation of stories and pictures of life in Colville’s early days, will be published soon. The articles were written by J.C. Herrigan, publisher of the Colville Examiner from 1907 to 1948. The book will look at 1923-1926 - a vibrant time in local history. The Kamiak Butte Summer Amphitheater Program will kick off the season June 17 at sundown. The first program of the series features WSU’s Summer Palace theater performers. Other performances include story telling, folk and Celtic music, a slide show on forestry lookouts, the Potlatch Junior Jammers and a presentation on Washington fish and wildlife. Sandpoint
A petition signed by 1,698 people in Sandpoint favors having a traffic signal in the Sandpoint to Kootenai Cutoff Project at Bonner Mall and Highway 95. This location is preferred over one farther south on Highway 95, according to John Albi of Pend Oreille Pasta and Wine. Albi also stated, in a letter to Scott Stokes of the Idaho Transportation Department, results from an open house in February indicated 70 percent preferred the mall location.

New girls basketball coach Kelly Hinthorn has set up summer tournaments, instructional camps and an open gym in an effort to take the team to state next season. She is counting on the senior girls’ dedication and leadership. Hinthorn is also the 6th grade Valley View teacher.

A Flag Day celebration will begin at 10 a.m. June 14 at the Post Falls Public Library. The new flag pole will be dedicated with a ceremony complete with Army Recruiting soldiers and members of the Fort Sherman Historical Society attending as color guards. The Moscow fireworks committee has extended the deadline to sign up for the Fourth of July Basketball Tournament to June 23. High school student Misty Beehner will attend the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. Teacher Karen Frank nominated Beehner for her leadership potential and academic achievement. She’ll visit with Congress members, the executive branch, the national news media and diplomatic corps.

Brad Biedermann of Sandy, Utah, won the first of two Harley Davidson motorcycles being raffled off by the Rancher’s Volunteer Fire Department. His name was chosen from 1,000 entries. Tickets are available through the Web site www.digicus.com/raffle. The raffle will help cover the fire department’s operating expenses.
