Mirabeau Visionaries Get Pathfinder Awards
Extraordinary leadership has helped transform Mirabeau Point from a dream to a reality, said Chuck Stocker, co-chair of Mirabeau Pathfinders, a grass-roots group that involves citizens in the design, funding and political stages of Mirabeau Point development.
Stocker recently presented Mirabeau Pathfinder Awards to these worthy recipients:
Washington State Sen. Bob McCaslin, for successfully appropriating $1.5 million in state funds for infrastructure, planning, and site preparation.
The Comstock Foundation - and specifically trustees Horton Herman, Charles Leslie, Bob Carter and Luke Williams - for financially investing in Mirabeau Point’s YMCA, Valley Senior Center, and Mirabeau Springs projects.
Greg Bever, a Mirabeau Point trustee, who has worked “with unflagging enthusiasm and unwavering focus on the goal of preserving the heart of the Valley at Mirabeau Point,” Stocker said.
Yards of bargains
Bargain hunters will find plenty to ogle today during Liberty Lake’s massive yard sale beginning at 9 a.m. More than 100 homes are participating in the sale, now in its seventh year. The sale spans several neighborhoods around the lake.
Food stands and restroom facilities are available throughout the community. Pick up a map of participating homes at Albertson’s or Chevron on Liberty Lake Drive.
“Visit the neighborhoods; make it a Saturday saunter,” said Lorraine Halverson, of Liberty Lake, co-chair of the event with Debbie Foulkes.
Golf scramble for a good cause
Enjoy great golf while supporting the Spokane Valley Center at its annual scramble golf tournament, July 28 at Liberty Lake’s MeadowWood Golf Course.
Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. The $75 entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, dinner, prizes, golf cart, and a tournament photo. Space is limited; register your foursome soon by calling 927-1153.
Dad of the year
Adept at juggling the responsibilities that come from being a single parent, full-time college student, and dedicated volunteer - all while battling multiple sclerosis - Michael Pierce was recently named MS Father of the Year by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Inland Northwest chapter.
Pierce, a Spokane Valley resident, was selected for the award for the priority he places on his family despite coping with an illness that leaves him unable to walk and chronically fatigued, said Terrie Nash, program director at the NMSS Inland Northwest chapter. Local winners will compete for the national award.
“I don’t know what I’d do without him,” said Nash of Pierce, who volunteers as a peer counselor at the local MS center. “Mike spends a lot of time with his son. He does a lot of everything. His hands are very full but he does a great job.”
EWU Presidential Scholarships
Beyond the pomp and circumstance of June ceremonies, several Spokane Valley high school graduates will attend university in the fall with some well-deserved scholarship money under their belts. Based on academic merit, Eastern Washington University recently awarded $2,000 Presidential Scholarships to incoming freshman for the 2000-01 school year. Congratulations to Central Valley High School grads Christine Talbot, daughter of Mark and Carla Talbot of Liberty Lake; Kirsten Anderson, daughter of Sheryl and Tim Anderson of Greenacres; and Bobijo Mueller, daughter of Karen and Joseph Mueller of Spokane.
Kudos also to Jessica Bowen, of East Valley High, daughter of Marlene and Rob Brown of Otis Orchards; Joshua Filzen, from Freeman High, son of Bev and James Filzen of Valleyford; and Audra Nicholson, from West Valley High, daughter of Joni and Jeff Nicholson of Spokane.
