Common job duties: Tuneups, gear-shift adjustments, repairs of bent tires and assembly of custom-ordered bikes.

Salary: $16,000-$19,000 a year.

Best part of job: “The people I meet and the people I then get to ride with.”

Job challenge: “When some guy who’s 6-foot-4-inches comes in and says, `I can’t keep a tire straight for more than three months.’ I take that as a challenge and make sure he’s going to be happy.”

Least favorite part of the job: Cleaning up neglected bikes before doing repairs. “I hate to be someone’s bike maid.”

Number of bikes he owns: “About five.”
