Loggers Rally Convoy For Roadless Hearing

From Staff

The Montana Wood Products Association is organizing convoys of logging trucks and passenger cars to attend a June 21 public hearing in Missoula on the Clinton administration’s proposal to prohibit new roads in 43 million acres of roadless areas in the national forests.

As many as 2,000 people - and their attendant rigs - could arrive in town in time for the nighttime hearing, said Cary Hegreberg, the association’s executive vice president.

During the last two weeks in June, the U.S. Forest Service will host 150 public hearings nationwide to take comment on the roadless initiative. The proposal would affect 5.8 million acres of roadless land in Montana.
