Nexus
Just days before auditioning for BOBFest, a member of the teen garage band Nexus quit.
The three remaining members quickly adjusted to the change and won a spot in the competition, despite the fact that their music was written for a four-piece group.
The band first started playing together on Jan. 1, 1999. In the beginning, Travis Kolassa and Kyle Davis began fooling around together on drums and guitar. Later, Ryan Walz joined in with a bass.
The three said music is in their blood, having played solo for years.
At first, the group’s material was heavily influenced by the band Silverchair. Nexus members now say they’ve developed their own style, which they describe as moderate alternative. Their music explores loneliness and relationships — rock ‘n’ roll with frequent emotional outbursts.
Davis, the lead singer and guitar player, writes the lyrics and much of the band’s music.
The group is looking for a replacement for the departed member, preferably someone who has a raspy, dark-sounding voice who could be lead vocalist.
For now, Nexus members say they’re thrilled with how the group is coming along. They feel slightly apprehensive about the BOBFest competition because they’ve never performed in front of a large crowd outside of school.
All the members said they expect an enormous adrenaline rush from the performance.
