Save Mustangs From The Spokesman-Review, May 2, 1971
To the editor of The Spokesman-Review:
Horses have played such a very important and necessary part in our lives, before America became mechanized, airborne, space-aged and polluted.
I grew up with horses. A lot of the time, when I was a kid, they were our mode of transportation. I rode horseback to school four miles each way, and I haven’t forgotten the many, many times my safety and very life depended on that trusty horse beneath me - especially when the temperature slid down towards 40 below or a blizzard came up.
The wild mustang is part of the American Heritage. They deserve protection from hunters, being chased to exhaustion by helicopters, planes and other means of capture. They deserve refuges of their own, where they can roam free and unharmed.
Those who love horses as I do know there is nothing more beautiful than a band of horses running wild and free, their manes and tails flying in the wind. Let’s not allow the Wild Mustang to become extinct - there are so few remaining.
Help and keep them, America! They are a symbol of freedom! Romaine Clouse Spokane
