WASHINGTON

Adams County Ritzville

A pair of yearling moose recently were seen wandering the streets, yards and back alleys of town. Washington State Patrol officers, fearing the animals would wander onto I-90, tried to herd them to Crab Creek, but the moose took a detour. They bedded down for the night on West Broadway Street before disappearing in the morning.

Ferry County ller

The ferry between Keller Ferry and the Colville Indian Reservation will be out of service June 19-24. Residents are warned to plan alternate routes through Grand Coulee, Kettle Falls or on the Gifford Ferry at Inchelium.

Grant County Ephrata

The Grand Coulee Dam laser light show is up and running for the season. GTA will run a round-trip bus every Friday and Saturday night from Moses Lake. There will be stops in Ephrata and Soap Lake.

Lincoln County Davenport

Claire Van Buren recently responded to complaints by Stockland neighbor Sharla Stiles that the manure and flies are overwhelming. Van Buren says Davenport is a farming community and the exchange is part of our heritage. She adds the exchange brings people into town, boosting local businesses.

Pend Oreille County Newport

Living in Pend Oreille County is good for your heart. That’s what the most recent Washington Health Foundation study shows. Folks in the county recorded one of the lowest rates of heart disease death in the state. About 22 percent of the 114 deaths during 1998 were due to heart disease compared to a statewide 27 percent.

Spokane County Spokane

The seventh annual Cancer Patient Care/Loreen Miller bike ride will be June 25, starting and ending at Mead Middle School, 12509 N. Market. More than 400 cyclists are expected to take part in one of three rides - the 64.8-mile century ride, the 34.55-mile half-century ride, or the 12-mile family ride. All raise funds for Cancer Patient Care, an agency that provides health care services for area cancer patients and their families. Call 456-0446 for more information.

Stevens County Colville

The Stevens County Animal Shelter has 10 dogs available for adoption. Breeds range from husky/German shepherd to Akitas, Rottweilers, Labradors and many smaller, mixed breed cuties. For adoption information, call (509)684-3131.

Whitman County Pullman

An all-campus reception is planned for Wednesday to introduce participants in the 2000 Summer Doctoral Fellows Program at Washington State University. The event, set for 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Lighty Student Services Atrium, welcomes 13 doctoral candidates from across the country who will work with WSU faculty for six weeks.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

The city pool opened later than expected and hours will be reduced, according to Millie Burk, pool manager. The changes are due to the shortage of lifeguards. Only three lifeguards were hired this year due to a lack of applications. Seven lifeguards are needed to extend hours. The new hours are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Bonner County Sandpoint

County commissioners will consider later in the month a permit for a temporary asphalt batch plant near Clark Fork. William Derr applied for the temporary permit. The hearing is set for 2 p.m. June 29 at the county courthouse.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The high school lost nearly two full-time English teaching positions in three years to budget cuts. The high school newspaper and journalism class has been cut from next year’s schedule but may exist as an after-school program, according to Principal Terry Sherven. Sherven said the school may also have to cancel the drama class.

Kootenai County Post Falls

The Friends Community Church will host a Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to noon June 26 through June 30. The class is for children who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade. A program for parents will be held at 7 p.m. June 29 to view their children’s projects. Children should wear play clothes. For more information, call (208) 773-5014.

Latah County Moscow

The council members decided Monday that a specialized city commission should not review proposed new subdivisions. The city’s transportation commission made the request of the council. The council did not want to add another layer of bureaucracy to the planning process or create delays and possibly extra expenses.

Shoshone County Kellogg

A group of youth met recently at Vital Linc Youth Center to sign cards for and to get updates on two local teens seriously hurt in a car accident last week. Eric Lomas, 15, was released Sunday and Dylan J. Flynn, 15, remains at Kootenai Medical Center in intensive care.

MONTANA

Lincoln County Libby

Flathead Electric Cooperative is proposing to raise its rates 6.9 percent for residential customers and 5.3 percent for commercial customers. Warren McConkey, general manager of the co-op, said the increase is needed due to a sharp rise in wholesale power rates from the Bonneville Power Administration, which accounts for about 60 percent of the co-op’s supply. He also said the increase would only put customers about 4 percent above the 1990 rates.
