Daytime Care Facility To Be Built For Elderly
Gritman Medical Center has received a $600,000 federal Rural Health Outreach Grant to establish an adult health facility in Moscow, Idaho.
The three-year grant will allow the hospital to develop the first health facility of its type in the state. Only 5,000 similar centers exist nationwide, said Sharon Benson, director of Gritman’s Therapy Central.
The adult health facility will provide an active treatment program for frail elderly people. No one will stay overnight, but meals, transportation and therapy will be provided during daytime work hours when the patients’ usual care providers are employed or have other commitments.
Caregivers will be able to bring frail elderly people to the facility for comprehensive daytime care. Such programs often save money for businesses, which sometimes lose productivity because employees miss work to care for elderly relatives, Benson said.
Gritman plans to begin fund raising to pay for the building, to be constructed near the hospital in downtown Moscow.
