Summer fun. School’s been out a whole weekend, and already you’re bored. So do something meaningful for your community. The Spokane Youth Volunteer Corps’ Summer 2000 program links young people to volunteer opportunities such as the Second Harvest Food Bank, SpokAnimal CARE and the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. Contact Program Director Jessie Quintero for information at (509) 838-6581.

Summer school. Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you can’t learn something. How about taking a dance class or learning how to cook? The Spokane County 4-H program offers a variety of classes and minicamps for young people of all ages. Call Program Coordinator Anita Raddatz at (509) 477-2166.

It all adds up. If you’re missing math class, Gonzaga University may be able to fill the gap. The university is offering a free, two-week math/science camp for high school students who’ve completed at least ninth grade and an algebra course. The camp runs July 24 through Aug. 4 and focuses on prepping students for the math section of the SAT. Applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Call Gail Nord at (509) 323-3907 or e-mail her at nord@gonzaga.edu.

We still want you. Students interested in applying for Our Generation can get an application, as long as they return it — completed — by June 30. We’re looking for movie and music critics, feature writers, columnists, photographers and artists. You must be between the ages of 13 and 19 to apply. For an application, call (509) 459-5456. Speak slowly and clearly, leaving your full name, age, home address plus zip code, phone number and the school you’ll be attending this fall. Correspondents will be chosen this summer.
