Nailing Signs On Utility Poles Illegal

Planning to nail garage sale or car wash signs to the utility poles in your neighborhood? You may want to think again - it is against the law in Washington and Idaho and it is a safety concern.

Nails, staples and other debris on poles pose a year-long hazard - especially at night - for all utility workers who climb poles.

“By law we could fine people who post signs on our poles, but we would rather seek everyone’s assistance for maintaining a safe working environment,” said Avista official Robin Zetwick.

If you see a sign on a utility pole, officials ask that you call Avista Utilities claims department at 495-4122 and report the location.
