Street Fair South Perry Event To Include Live Music, Vintage Vehicle Show, Quilt Judging In/Around: South Perry

The business owners along South Perry want more people to know their shopping area has new life.

They are planning the first annual South Perry Summer Street Faire on July 22. It will have old cars, live music, quilts and other activities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The main thing is to get people out to look at the newly renovated South Perry Business District,” said Mel Silva, president of the business owners association.

Spokane’s Charlie Ryan, who wrote and performed the popular song, “My Hot Rod Lincoln,” will be one of the day’s musical acts.

He will be there with his vintage Lincoln, too.

Silva will be showing off his two restored vehicles, a 1953 Ford pickup and a 1970 Chevrolet El Camino.

The car show will include classic automobiles as well as vehicles from the Model “A” Ford Club.

Some of the old cars will be parked in business lots. The Model “A’s” will be on the green in Grant Park to the west of the business area.

Kindred Spirits, Etc., a quilt shop in the Perry district, is organizing a quilt show through owner Belinda LaBounty. Anyone who wants to enter the quilt judging should call LaBounty at 535-6832 or Fran Anderson at the Sunnybrook Farm gift shop in the old windmill building. The phone number there is 534-5984.

Mark Camp, owner of The Shop coffee and espresso cafe, is lining up several bands to perform throughout the day, including the Trailer Park Girls of Spokane.

There’s even talk about a guest appearance by a Spokane celebrity other than Mayor John Talbott, but Silva said he hasn’t confirmed his special guest yet.

Talbott is expected to show up for a tree-planting ceremony and the quilt judging.

Silva said the tree to be planted during the fair is the first of several street trees that will be purchased through a $45,000 community development grant set aside for a series of South Perry improvements.

A portion of the sales at participating businesses and vendors will be donated to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, which is located in the neighborhood.

The South Perry Business Association is composed of 25 independent businesses in the area.
