Charbonneau Earns Game’S Mvp Award
Lakeside High School’s Chad Charbonneau was named defensive most valuable player in the Class 2A East vs. West all-state football game played June 16 in Yakima’s Zaepfel Stadium.
The 6-foot, 275-pound defensive tackle had eight solo tackles, three assisted tackles and two sacks for the East, which lost 7-0.
He played the entire game and was one of the team captains.
Charbonneau is headed to North Idaho College to wrestle. He plans to study elementary education.
“That was probably the last game I’ll ever play in so it was a great way to go out,” he said, noting he’s sad he won’t play football in college.
The game’s offensive MVP was Eddie Keele of Othello.
Baseball
After nearly winning the triple crown for Washington State University, redshirt freshman Stefan Bailie received honorable mention to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Bailie, a native of Mesa, Wash., and a graduate of Kamiakin High School, finished second for the Cougars in batting at .315, first with 12 home runs and first with 35 RBIs. His 12 home runs matched the freshman school record set by Jason Grove in 1998.
Gonzaga University second baseman Eric Rodland also received honorable mention on the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team.
Rodland, from Snohomish, Wash., batted .310 for the Bulldogs and had hitting streaks of 12 and 11 games.
Washington Wranglers Baseball, which plans an August trip to Cuba, will hold tryouts July 5 at 2 p.m. at Ferris High School for players ages 15-18.

Basketball
Jim Enslin of Shorecrest High School, Bob Ross of Washington and Mike Mullen of Bethel will be inducted Friday into the Washington State Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
Dinner and ceremonies are scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Tacoma Elks Lodge. Tickets are $12 apiece.
Enslin took Shorecrest to the state tournament eight straight times, through 1982. Mullen, who coached at five schools, spent 20 years at Bethel and took 11 teams to state in his 23 seasons overall. Ross included 18 seasons at Washington and led the Parkland school to at least a share of six league championships.

Whitworth College has added two former Eastern Washington high school standouts to its men’s basketball recruiting class for next winter.
Former All-Greater Spokane League player Chris Blotsky (North Central) will transfer from Lewis & Clark College and ex-Curlew star Gunner Olsen will transfer from Wenatchee Valley College, according to Whitworth coach Warren Friedrichs.
Blotsky averaged seven points per game as a freshman during the 1998-99 season. Olsen averaged 12 points and eight rebounds per game while leading WVC to a runner-up finish in the NWAACC tournament last season.
College scene
Running back Giorgio Usai, a junior from Spokane’s Central Valley High, helped Western Washington University dominate the Columbia Football Association in the classroom, as well as on the playing field.
Usai, who carries a 3.16 grade-point average while majoring in business management, has been named to the 1999-2000 CFA’s honorary academic football team.
Selection is based on a player’s accumulative GPA for his entire career through the end of spring quarter. Only starters are eligible.
Western, which won last fall’s CFA championship, placed 11 players on the 24-man squad.
Former Eastern Washington University quarterback Scott Mitchell of Kennewick also represented the Vikings.
Longtime Central Washington University sports information director Bob Guptill has been named public relations director for the Pacific West Conference.
Football
Roger Henry, a two-time All-Great Northern League running back for Deer Park, has signed a letter-of-intent to play for Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D.
Henry rushed for more than 1,800 yards the past two seasons.
Golf
Several Inland Northwest players advanced to the AAU national championships by placing among the top four in their age brackets in the Pacific Northwest Junior Championships held Monday in Yakima.
All-Greater Spokane League pick Megan Breer, who will be a senior at Ferris High, won the 19-and-under girls title by shooting an 85. Gina Hoal, a recent Ferris grad, finished second. Alix Plaster of Liberty Lake won the 16-and-under girls title with an 83. Roslyn Folk and Tiffany Kunkel of Coeur d’Alene placed second and third.
Mike Person of Liberty Lake shared first place with a 76 in 14-and-under boys. Casey Murphy of Rathdrum tied for third. Josh White of Newman Lake finished second in boys 12-and-under. Kyle Conklin of Clarkston placed fourth in 16 and under boys.
Rowing
Corrie McGrath, a member of the WSU women’s varsity crew, completed participation in an exclusive national training camp for freshmen last weekend.
McGrath, from Marysville, Wash., was one of 16 freshmen who participated in the camp conducted in Chula Vista, Calif., by the United States women’s national rowing team coach, Hartmut Buschbacher.
McGrath became the sixth WSU rower to participate in a pre-elite training camp.
Soccer
Former University High soccer player Heather Sale will play for Whitworth College this fall.
Tennis
University of Idaho tennis coach Greg South has announced the signing of Christopher Faulman of Portland for the 2000-01 season. Faulman has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the Pacific Northwest in junior tennis competition.
Track and field
Rich Tucker, competing in the 55-59 age group, won the 800-meter run at the Portland Masters Track & Field Classic last weekend in a time of 2 minutes, 14 seconds.
Associate dean of student services for the Community Colleges of Spokane, Tucker also placed second in the 400M with a time of 57.5. Dave Walter of Seattle, the American record-holder, won in 54.2.
Weightlifting
Brent Mikesell of Spokane placed second in the heavyweight division at the American Powerlifters Federation national powerlifting championships June 10-11 in Detroit.
Mikesell finished right behind world champion Gary Frank while setting a handful of Washington state records. His lifts were 1,003 pounds in the squat, 557 in the bench press and 782 in the deadlift. His three-lift total of 2,342 pounds is a state record and the 13th-highest total in the sport’s history.
On June 17, Mikesell was named outstanding lifter at the West Coast Open Championships in Newport, Ore., where he totaled 2,304.
Luke Harris won the 275-pound over-35 division and was named best lifter in his age group. Agnar Adalsteinsson won the open 275-pound class with the help of a state-record 826-pound squat. Both men are from Spokane.
Wrestling
Two Inland Northwest wrestlers have been named to the 15th annual Asics Tiger High School All-America team.
Gonzaga Prep graduate Travis Pascoe, 189 pounds, and Sandpoint junior Jake Rosholt, 171, were both second-team selections.
Washington was one of two states with more than one first-team choice with Mike Magnusson, 103, from Blaine and Michael Christian, 215, from Lynnwood.
Honorable mention selections were Martin Mitchell from Tonasket at 119, Matt Ellis from Prosser, 171, and Graham Morin, Squalicum High of Bellingham, 160.
The Asics Tiger All-America Team is selected by a nationwide panel of experts and is considered the top honor in prep wrestling.
