Othello

Reichert’s Showhouse is expanding and remodeling to include two screens, stadium seating, rocking seats and cupholders. The showhouse also has a stage for plays. Owner Bob Reichert says he’s trying to be competitive with Moses Lake theaters and doesn’t think ticket prices will rise.

Ferry County

Republic

The federal government has funded three additional Border Patrol agents in the area. The patrol, the county Sheriff’s Department and the Republic Police Department are working together to battle drug smuggling.

Grant County

Ephrata

Best Tree Service officials pleaded guilty to bid-rigging in connection with a Bonneville Power Administration brush-clearing contract in Oregon. A federal judge will review the plea agreement Aug. 7. The agreement requires BTS to pay $100,000 in fines and $200,000 in restitution.

Lincoln County

Davenport

A grand opening is planned Friday for the DCY youth center located in the old county fairgrounds auditorium. Director D.J. Sherwood says all kinds of small items are needed to get off to a good start. Visitors are asked to bring a “housewarming gift” to the event. Soap, garbage bags, toilet paper, cleansers, mops - “anything you use at home, we need too,” says Sherwood. The party runs from 7 to 9 p.m.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

Four low-income families will have a chance for affordable housing in Newport. The Pend Oreille Valley Habitat for Humanity chapter has purchased four lots on the south side of town, on the corner of Sixth Street and State Avenue.

Five Mary Walker High School students received associate degrees from Community Colleges of Spokane through the Running Start program: Rachel Adams, Kayla Willis, Nathan Amouroux, Travis Hansen and Jessy Hummel.

Bright Beginnings Pre-school has trained a class of butterfly farmers. The children, with the help of teachers Diane Smith and Ruth Lindquist, raised 33 Painted Lady butterflies. The teachers ordered 33 larvae and a butterfly garden kit. Kids observed as the larvae changed to chyrsalides in one week. It took three weeks for the butterflies to emerge.

At a special Moscow-Pullman Regional Airport Board meeting held Tuesday, William R. (Robb) Parish was appointed the new airport manager. He fills a vacancy left when David Crowner accepted a job in Spokane. Parish, a certified pilot, was the director of the business incubator at the University of Idaho. He has experience with both the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation. He starts July 10.

IDAHO

Benewah County

St. Maries

Chris Renaldo, a surveyor, St. Maries business owner and youth soccer coach, will go to Europe for three weeks to coach a U.S. youth team. The team will compete in Denmark, Norway and Scotland. Renaldo has been asked for several years to coach but had to decline because it’s during his business’s busiest time of the year.

Main Street Music 2000 is a fund-raiser for the West Bonner County Food Bank and the Beardmore Restoration Main Street Theatre project. The event will begin Saturday with the Easy Pickins Band performing from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the street in front of the theater’s entrance. The street will be blocked for dancing. Too Hots will perform Aug. 9 and The Other White Meat will perform Sept. 30. The Community Resource Planning Committee and the Selkirk-Priest Basin Association sponsor the events.

High school junior Kip Harman was chosen to become a People to People Sports Ambassador. He’ll travel to Spain soon to play international football in the Barcelona Ambassador Bowl. Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver and defensive back Randall Youst will coach the team Harman will play on.

A benefit for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life 2000 will be held July 7 at the Rathdrum Lions Club. The Lions will serve a spaghetti dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Local grocers donated the food the Lions Club will use to prepare the dinner. Raffle tickets will be sold for $1. Twenty-five gallons of gas, a fishing rod and reel and more will be raffled. The drawing will be at 4:30 p.m. July 15 during Rathdrum Days. All proceeds will benefit Relay for Life. Mayor Marshall Comstock is seeking suggestions on how to use a $5 million dollar donation given to the city from the estate of Bob Hamilton. Hamilton wanted the money to be used in the city parks and recreation projects. The Community Action Agency will be giving boxes of food to residents who qualify at 10 a.m. today at the Wallace Arts Center, on Bank Street. The event is part of the agency’s Outreach Program.
