Pullman Voters Deny Middle School Levy

Pullman voters rejected a $15.6million bond to reconstruct aging Lincoln Middle School on Tuesday.

Whitman County Auditor Dave Repp said with all of the precinct ballots counted, the middle school bond measure had 2,446 yes votes to 1,906 no votes for 56 percent approval. The measure needed 60 percent support to pass.

The other two measures, a technology levy and a maintenance and operations levy, passed with solid support from Pullman voters.

The $1.2 million levy that would update technology throughout the district passed with 65 percent voter approval. A two-year maintenance and operations levy for $3.2 million in 2001 and $3.25 million in 2002 also was approved by approximately 66 percent.

In Colfax, voters passed a two-year maintenance and operations levy of $772,000 for 2001 and $795,000 for 2002 by 954 yes votes to 381 no votes for 71.46 percent.

In Garfield, voters passed a $200,0000 maintenance and operations levy and a $20,000 levy for improvements to the Garfield School by 74 percent approval.

In Palouse, Steptoe, Tekoa, Endicott, Washtucna and Oakesdale, voters all approved maintenance and operations levies.

School and hospital levies in Lincoln and Ferry counties passed Tuesday with solid majorities.

In Lincoln County, a one-year, $415,000 operating levy for the Odessa School District had 72.3 percent support, 345-132. The Odessa Hospital District did even better, with 74.2 percent support for a one-year, $365,000 levy. The vote was 396-138.

In Ferry County, a two-year, $254,000-a-year operating levy for the Republic School District had 66.5 percent support, 662-334.

Operating levies require 60 percent support to pass.

There were no levies or other local issues on the ballot in Spokane, Stevens or Pend Oreille counties.
