Center’S Fund-Raising Gets Boost Silver Lanes Events Bolster Drive For New Senior Activity Building

One of the business neighbors to the Southside Senior Activity Center has pitched in more than $6,000 to help build a proposed new senior center building.

Silver Lanes casino and bowling center in the Lincoln Heights Shopping Center held two benefit events as part of the campaign to raise $2 million for a new senior center.

The first event was a bowling benefit last fall that netted $3,000 for the project.

Last month, the senior center was one of three local charities to benefit from earnings at the casino’s charity gaming table.

The money was raised over a four-month period and came to $3,118 for the senior center. The proceeds were accrued during specially designated hours each Wednesday during the fund-raising period.

“We hope to continue this wonderful partnership,” said Myrna Johnson-Ross, director of the center.

Plans call for building a new center along Ray Street on land currently owned by the Parks and Water departments. The senior center has a lease for the property and has hired an architect to draw plans.

The campaign has raised more than $800,000 toward its funding goal.
