Music Link brings community together
The cover story for the Feb. 17 North Side Voice by staff writer Kristen Kromer focused on the contribution that The Hub grant provides, in collaboration with Spokane School District 81, the Music Link rhythm class for elementary school children.
I am excited about the response to efforts by District 81 to involve the community with public schools and to foster a sense of community among the students.
Sandra Bovee, local coordinator for the Music Teachers National Association’s Music Link program, developed the idea for the after-school rhythm class. Teresa Spittal, Regal’s music specialist, volunteered and took the active role to develop the curriculum and brought with her innovative methods and materials. Sandra and her husband, Bob, each week voluntarily help Mrs. Spittal to present the class.
Music Link, through the Spokane Music Teachers Association and volunteers from the community, also provides scholarships for private music instruction for many children who would otherwise have limited access to such a valuable experience. It should be noted that the Music Link program is supported by contributions of money and resources from local businesses and individuals. Some of the benefactors include Metropolitan Mortgage, Wasmer Foundation, Johnston-Hanson Foundation, Comstock Foundation and Washington Trust Bank.
Spokane is fortunate to enjoy the successful partnership of public and private interests dedicated to this community’s future through investment of resources, talent and efforts, to provide enhanced educational opportunity for our most precious resource - our children. Gary Smith Spokane
