Adams County Othello
Janna Benzel will be crowned Miss Teen Rodeo Washington on Saturday. Along with her coronation ceremony, there will be a benefit auction to raise traveling money for area parades and events. The affair will get under way at 6 p.m. at the Othello Golf Club. A New York steak dinner will be on the grill. Cost is $12, including entertainment and dancing.
Ferry County Inchelium
The Colville Tribal Council will ask all members to vote on livestock issues at its March 18 meeting. The tribe is considering closing all open range areas on its lands. If approved, landowners, lessees, allotees and those with range permits for horses, cattle and the like, will be liable if their livestock is hit on a roadway. Owners would be forced to pay damages unless covered by insurance.
Grant County Ephrata
The majority of Ephrata school students feel safe in their classrooms. But a recent survey showed kids were more wary about the parking lot area and walking to and from school. Kids also felt that video cameras and security officers don’t make a big difference in safety, but making visitors wear identification badges is helpful.
Lincoln County Reardan
The third-grade class has a heart for the local food bank. In the school’s recent food drive, the third-graders collected more canned foods and nonperishable items than any other class. The food bank has 2,000 new items on its shelves. The food drive was coordinated by sophomores Ashley Jones and Danyelle Maylek, who were sponsoring the event for their Family Career and Community Leaders of America project.
Pend Oreille County Selkirk
The Selkirk Rangers girls basketball team earned the State B Scholastic Champion award for their incredible work in the classroom. The team’s combined GPA is 3.78. Also top dogs when it comes to hitting the books is the school pep band. The band sports a 3.68 combined grade-point average. They also earned State B honors.
Spokane County Deer Park
Deer Park High School senior Laurie Miller was recently selected as one of 7,600 National Merit Scholarship finalists from around the nation. Finalists are chosen based on several factors, including PSAT scores, high school grades, essays and activities.
Stevens County Chewelah
Only 10 building permits were issued in Chewelah in 1999. Five of those permits were issued for removal of mobile homes. Of the other five, four were for stick-built or modular homes, with one written for a mobile. When considering the numbers, the net gain of new homes was a whopping zero. These statistics mark a 10-year low in new construction for the town. The city hit a peak building period between 1991 and 1993.
Whitman County Pullman
The United Way of Pullman is accepting applications from local human service organizations who would like to be considered for inclusion in the fall 2000 United Way campaign fund drive. Agencies must demonstrate their programs and services directly benefit residents of Pullman and greater Whitman County and have not-forprofit status. Last year, United Way of Pullman raised $127,000 for local human service agencies on the Palouse. For more information, contact United Way at (509) 334-4015.

Benewah County St.Maries
The Music Club will host a spaghetti feed benefit at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Eagles Lodge. Funds raised will help cover travel expenses to Seattle for concert and jazz band members to compete in the Heritage Music Festival.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Cara Warren, born Feb. 18, to Destinee Blakey and Shaun Warren, needs heart surgery. Cara was born with arteries hooked to the wrong side of her heart. The family is in Seattle at the University Children’s Hospital waiting for Cara to gain enough strength for the surgery. Donations are needed to cover medical and boarding expenses and can be made to the Cara Warren Fund at the Wells Fargo Bank.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The Boundary Community Hospital will meet with community members to prioritize health care needs and set goals to accomplish them during a meeting set for 6:30-9:30 p.m. today at the high school cafeteria.
Kootenai County Rathdrum
Mary Whelchel, a Christian author, speaker, national radio talk show host and director of Women’s Ministries at Moody Church in Chicago will be the guest speaker Friday and Saturday at the New Life Community Church. The theme, “The Freedom of Spiritual Discipline and Prayer,” covers spiritual ethics for women in the office and home work force. Latah County Moscow
College Street between Jackson and Railroad streets will be closed for storm and sewer construction. Only business traffic will be allowed. Thursday the west lane of Jackson Street will narrow to two lanes from Third to Sixth streets and to one lane from Seventh to Eighth. This portion of the project should be completed March 10.
Shoshone County Wallace
Lookout Pass, on the Idaho/ Montana border, has announced its spring price break on the 2000/2001 season passes. A family of three (two adults and one junior) is $299, adults $125, juniors $99, and seniors $62. The reduced price is good through April 30 and includes the rest of this season. Lincoln County Libby
The fifth annual Irish Fair “Follow us to the Irish Fair” will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. March 11. The event celebrates Irish and Celtic heritage and culture and includes a craft fair at Memorial Gym from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a concert at Asa Wood Elementary School at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature the Celtic Nots, the Highlanders Pipe Band and the Shaughnessy Hill Band.
