Sasquatch Stifle Clark
Women’s basketball
When the Community Colleges of Spokane women’s basketball team turns up the heat, there’s not much an opponent can do.
The latest team to be schooled by the Sasquatch defense is Clark Community College, which fell to CCS 69-48 in a quarterfinal game at the NWAACC tournament at Vancouver, Wash.
“Our defense just carried us this game,” CCS coach Bruce Johnson said. “That’s our strength. We’ve been doing that all year long.”
The Sasquatch held Clark, which was playing on its home court, to 14 points in the second half after CCS led by one (35-34) at halftime.
“We just turned up the defense and it was over,” said Johnson, noting that though he made some changes in his defense for the second half, the key was limiting Clark to one shot on most possessions.
Bernice Stime scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for CCS. Sara Harchuck, a defensive stalwart on the perimeter, scored 15, and Abby Wood added another 15.
In today’s semifinals, CCS (27-3) plays Chemeketa (28-3) at 8 p.m., preceded by Wenatchee Valley (28-4) vs. Umpqua (29-1).
