Two Burglary Suspects Compound Predicament

Two Spokane burglary suspects locked themselves out of their car Tuesday afternoon.

A man and woman were arrested at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday after a stolen check was used to buy clothing, shoes and jewelry at ShopKo, 13414 E. Sprague.

The check, as well as a wallet found in the suspects’ car, had been stolen earlier from an employee at Aspen Sound in the Valley.

Someone from ShopKo called the Sheriff’s Office about two customers whose behavior seemed suspicious.

They said a woman had tried to buy $300 worth of merchandise with a check, but the check did not clear. The woman left the store, but then returned with a man. He wrote another check for the merchandise. That check did clear.

When deputies arrived at the ShopKo parking lot, they found a man with a shaved head and sunglasses using a coat hanger to try to pick the lock on a white Ford Probe.

David Raider, 25, 1102 E. Liberty, and Tonya Childress, 26, 1629 S. Havana, were charged with felony theft, forgery and possessing stolen property.

When deputies searched the suspects, they found a small, plastic scale with methamphetamine residue. Raider was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.

The suspects were taken to the Spokane County Jail in separate cars.

After arriving at the courthouse, deputies said, Childress broke free from deputies as they were taking her from the car to the building.

She opened the door to the car carrying Raider and both attempted to escape on foot, but were caught before leaving the parking lot, according to the Sheriff’s office.

They were booked on an additional charge of trying to escape arrest.
