Munhall Leads Gu Past Illinois St.

Brian Munhall went 2-for-4 with a double, drove in four runs and scored three as Gonzaga University defeated Illinois State 12-10 in the 2000 Pepsi/ Johnny Quick Classic baseball tournament Monday in Fresno, Calif.

GU (7-4) set the tone in the offensive showcase with a two-run first inning. But by the time the Bulldogs came up again, their starting pitcher, Scott Stencil, had been chased without getting an out and they trailed 4-2. Not for long. A four-run uprising in the top of the second put them ahead to stay.

Adam Stokey and Kevin Hara drove in two runs each for the Zags.

GU plays Southern Illinois today.

College men’s basketball

Community Colleges of Spokane freshman forward Andre Ervin was named most valuable player at the NWAACC tournament won by CCS on Saturday.

Teammate Chris Allen earned the Arthur D. Feiro Award, given yearly to the top male and female scholar-athletes in the NWAACC.

Ervin averaged 14 points per game in the tournament, in which the Sasquatch beat Wenatchee Valley 86-79 in win their first NWAACC title since 1968-69.

Allen, a North Central High graduate, averaged 12.0 points in the tournament.

CCS freshman center Steve Chamberlain was named to the first all-tournament team.
