Othello

Even the kids get into the act during the annual Sandhill Crane Festival. The festival, scheduled for March 24-26, pays homage to the local bird. This year, the Othello Boys and Girls Club will host the first annual Kids’ Bus Tour of the cranes’ native habitat.

Ferry County

Did residents see a UFO on Feb. 19? Several county residents reported a glowing green oblong-shaped object streaking across the sky west to east. The Seattle UFO Center says there were several nearly identical reports on that night at 11:45 p.m. A few minutes before the Ferry County sightings, a similar report came to the center from southern Puget Sound.

Ephrata

The Ephrata Saddle Club has until June 1 to find a new home. The club has to vacate its current location because the city sold 20 of the 47 acres the club has been using to an unidentified company. The city has pledged to help the club find a new location.

Lincoln County

Harrington

Eugene Cronrath recently received the John Companius Holm Award for his 38 years of volunteer work for the National Weather Service. Cronrath is credited with helping establish a climate record that is useful in agriculture, road engineering and other weather-related work. His records for Harrington are part of a nationwide weather database.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

The Spokane Teacher’s Credit Union and the Pend Oreille County Public Utility District will have to be patient. They are awaiting site approval for their new Newport building at the corner of Union and Pine. The city has asked the state Department of Transportation to look over the plans before signing off. Parking is a main concern. The city feels there may not be enough off-street parking spaces.

Problem gambling will be addressed at Deaconess Medical Center, first floor auditorium, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. March 15. Members of the community are invited to attend the Community Initiative on Problem Gambling, sponsored by Deaconess and the Washington State Council on Problem Gambling.

Colville

For his senior project, Colville High School student Nic Musmecci organized, promoted and starred in a benefit concert for two fellow students who are battling serious illnesses. Musmecci is known for his country and Christian music. He got a band together and put on a concert to help Lindsay Luiten and Eric Black. More than $1,200 was raised.

Pullman

Washington State University student vocalist Julie Silvera-Jensen will present her senior recital of works by Rossini, Bizet, Literes and Burleigh on March 21. The 8 p.m. program is open to the public without charge at Pullman’s St. James Episcopal Church at 1410 NE Stadium Way. Silvera-Jensen is a recent winner at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival for best female alto vocalist. She has studied with WSU faculty member Julie Wieck for the last three years and starred in several theater productions.

St. Maries

The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation will be hiring eight people for summer jobs at Heyburn State Park. Available jobs include three grounds maintenance positions, two retail positions and one interpretive. Most of the jobs run May through September, with some starting in April and ending in October. Applications are available at the Job Service or park headquarters and are due by March 15. For more information, call 686-1308.

Sandpoint

National award-winning violinist and concert master Jason Moody with violinists Emily Terrell and Jessica Andregg and Amanda Davis on the oboe and English horn are all Sandpoint residents who perform with the Spokane Youth Orchestra. The orchestra will perform two concerts at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday at the First Lutheran church. Donations will be accepted.

Bonners Ferry

“Warm Country Nights by Firelight” is the theme chosen for Boundary Community Hospital’s 2000 Festival of Trees. The festival committee also chose theme colors as hunter green and cranberry red with plaids. The event will be Dec. 8 and 9 at the Armory. The committees’ next meeting will be March 8 at Ruth and Jim Burkholder’s home.

Kootenai County

Coeur d’Alene

A rally in support of keeping open the children’s parks, the basketball and tennis courts at McEuen Field and the Third Street boat launch and parking area is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at McEuen Field. Boaters are asked to bring their boats, parents are asked to bring their children who use the area and sports fans are asked to bring their athletic equipment, all in a show of support to preserve the area. Take a lunch.

Moscow

Three McDonald Elementary School students took the top three places during a recent districtwide spelling bee and will represent Moscow in a regional spelling bee at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston on March 18. Sixth-grader Ben Flores took first place, sixth grader Nicholas Smith second and fifth-grader Michael Atkinson third.

Shoshone County

Mullan

James Pool, a Mullan High School student, was recently selected to attend the National Student Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. this summer. Pool is raising the $2,000 needed to make the trip. Guest speakers will include President Bill Clinton, U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

The Youth Job Fair is set for 5 to 8 p.m. on March 16 at City Hall in the Ponderosa Room. Employers looking for employees and those interested in providing interview experience for students may call Kim at the Job Service at (406) 293-6282, extension 225.
