WSU Starts Process To Punish Brawlers

Washington State University officials said Monday they are initiating the process of disciplining students involved in an unruly street gathering over the weekend.

Approximately 500-700 students gathered on College Hill late Friday after a large house party grew out of control. Bottles and rocks were thrown as police tried to disperse the crowd.

Disciplinary action is also anticipated for students who participated in an unrelated brawl between two fraternities the same night.

WSU student affairs personnel will interview students this week who were identified as being involved in the College Hill incident. They could be brought before a university conduct review board for possible disciplinary action.

Students charged with criminal offenses will be automatically subject to conduct reviews. Two students were charged with being minors in possession of alcohol and at least one student has been charged with assault. Other arrests may be pending.

The disciplinary action for students could range from educational intervention to community service, probation or even expulsion. The fraternities involved in the fight could be sanctioned, and in the worst case, lose recognition from the university. Such hearings generally take four to six weeks to complete.
