Strengths

Scads of money because he opted out of federal matching fund limits.

Texas record showed ability to attract Democrats and minorities.

Outside-the-Beltway image with no Washington baggage.

People like his dad, especially in retrospect.

Weaknesses

Lingering perception that he’s too scripted and not very smart or deep.

Mediocre debating skills.

Campaign tactics pushed him far to the political right. Needs to regain the center.

Unanswered questions about his past will keep the drug jokes flowing. Must shed silver-spoon, frat-boy image.

Al Gore (D)

Strengths

Ferocious and tireless campaigner.

Benefits from public approval of President Clinton’s job performance and strong economic record.

Has largely shed wooden, beta male image and established his own identity in public mind.

Aggressive and accomplished debater, with impressive mastery of policy and detail.

Weaknesses

Link to Clinton scandals - especially fund-raising.

Was pushed to the left during the primary on some issues, such as gays in military, that may not play well in swing states.

Tendency to exaggerate his achievments, such as inventing the Internet.

Lack of charisma.
