Grant Students Show Off Artwork

Art was on the menu last Thursday, when Grant Elementary staff transformed the school’s every-day cafeteria into a one-day art extravaganza.

The annual “A Starry Night” event, named after Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting, showcased art created by 200 of the school’s 600 students.

Parents walked through the makeshift display walls - upright folding tables - oohing and aahing over the multitude of drawings, paintings, paper cuttings and sculptures.

Fourth-grader Kara Regan beamed as she stood next to her painting, untitled, of a peaceful lake. The painting features a still lake surrounded by pines, and Regan even included their rippled reflections.

“You make the reflections smaller than the real trees because they look blurry,” she explained.

The 10-year-old artist said she learned her technique from watching the Bob Ross art program on public television. She watches the show faithfully and has a Bob Ross companion book to help her follow along.

Mom Diane Regan said her daughter started painting on her own.

“She grabbed stuff and just started going,” she said.

The event is part of the national Imagination Celebration Month, during which schools honor creativity and art.

Dessert auction at Cheney High

Cheney High School is hosting a dessert auction today to raise money for the school’s concert choir.

The event, in the school’s old gym, starts at 7 p.m. and features the choir, the Music `n’ Motion dance ensemble team and, of course, desserts. The delectable desserts are made by volunteers and donated by local businesses.

“We’ve had pies go for as much as $250,” said volunteer Shawnna Stockton. “But they were good pies.”

The money will go toward a trip the choir is taking within the month to Disneyland and to other choir expenses.
