Bulldogs Gain Split On Road

Gonzaga blew a six-run lead in the first game, but came back with a victory in the nightcap to gain a split in a West Coast Conference baseball twinbill against Santa Clara in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday.

Jim Wallace’s two-out RBI double off Bulldogs closer Matt Siwek (0-3) in the bottom of the ninth rallied the Broncos to an 8-7 victory. Santa Clara trailed 7-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

In the nightcap, Barry Matthews (4-0) tossed a complete-game five-hitter and Jared Hertz had three hits and three RBIs to spark the Bulldogs (8-7, 2-2) to a 5-3 victory over the Broncos (8-14, 1-1).

Justin Williams had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Washington State Cougars to an 11-6 non-conference victory over the Oregon State Beavers at Coleman Field in Corvallis, Ore.

Reliever Matt O’Brien (4-0) picked up the win for WSU (8-12) with 3 scoreless innings of work.

OSU (10-7) saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end.

The Whitworth Pirates split a pair of games on Sunday at the Northwest Nazarene/ Albertson College baseball tournament in Caldwell, Idaho.

Darin Radke tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lead the Whits to a 13-3 win over Central Washington in the opener.

Scott Skeen and Jason Wonderlich combined to one-hit the Pirates (3-7) in an 11-0 win in the second game.

Softball

The Whitworth Pirates opened the Northwest Conference women’s softball season with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Lewis & Clark College.

Kira Bliss, who picked up wins in both games, twirled a complete-game two-hitter and added an RBI single to lead the Pirates to a 2-0 victory in the opener.

Whitworth (2-4, 2-0) scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, without the benefit of a hit, and went on to defeat Lewis & Clark (0-4, 0-2) 3-1 in the second game.

Community Colleges of Spokane went 1-1 on the final day of the Phoenix Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.

Rebecca Triplett’s three-run home run sparked CCS to a five-run first inning and the Sasquatch went on to a 7-3 win over Eastern Arizona.

In the second game, Phoenix College blanked the Pirates 8-0.
