Don’T Like Rap? This One May Sway You
DMX “And Then There Was X”
DMX, one of the most prolific rappers in the ‘90s is at the top of the charts again with his new album “And Then There Was X,” his third release in two years.
Compared to his other albums, “And Then There Was X” is a journey deeper into the mind that is DMX. On this album he delves into his internal struggle between his god and devil that are portrayed by DMX and Damien respectively.
On his past two albums, he’s let the rhythm and beat control how he lays out the lyrics. On this album, however, he frees himself from those hindrances and lets the lyrics flow regardless of the beat.
This different style gave many other critics the feeling that he was losing his edge, which is in no way true. He’s still sitting atop the rap throne with the rest of the Ruff Ryders.
There are sinister street narratives about robbing stores (“One More Road to Cross”) and getting rid of back-stabbers (“The Professional”).
And on the solemn “Here We Go Again,” DMX assumes the character of a fatherly outlaw who describes his thoughts about ending a young drug dealer’s life.
“More 2 A Song” is a critique of the notion that flashy jewelry and clothes will win love and respect on the streets.
Overall, this album is a new look into the mind of DMX. Fans will see a different side and style.
Some critics compare DMX and his music to a religion saying that his fans from the start just follow blindly and enjoy every minute of it. To people just beginning to listen to DMX, this critic says, “Be warned, you just might get converted.”
