Experts foresee a day when more people access the Internet with a mobile phone than with a personal computer.

Already, mobile phone subscribers in Japan regularly download cartoon images that they view on little display screens. In Finland, cell phones are being used as a payment system for soft-drink vending machines.

The big question is whether Americans will embrace this trend or allow it to bypass them like smartcards.

While most of the latest examples involve commercial operators, individuals also are at risk of outside attack when they access the Internet.

One way to help fend off cybercriminals is a firewall, which literally makes your computer invisible to overtures from hackers intent on doing damage.
