Maryland Flips A Coin
George Washington’s profile remains on the head of new quarters designed by the 50 states, but Maryland is remembering the nation’s first president on the reverse side, too. The Maryland State House, the site where Washington resigned his Army commission in order to accept the presidency, will replace the American eagle on Maryland’s quarter, the seventh in a commemorative series issued by the U.S. Mint.“The Old Line State” - how Washington described Maryland’s stalwart Revolutionary soldiers - also adorns the back of the quarter, unveiled Monday. Gov. Parris Glendening selected the design from hundreds of entries. More than 1 billion Maryland quarters will be stamped in a 10-week period to answer demand for the commemorative coins, said David Pickens, associate director of the U.S. Mint.
