School Levies At Stake Today District 81 Seeks Three-Year Replacement Levy
School officials throughout Eastern Washington are urging residents to go to the polls today.
In Spokane County alone, voters are being asked to approve nearly $250 million in replacement levies for 12 districts.
Spokane School District 81, the largest among them, is seeking a $122.6 million three-year levy. School officials stress that the levy measures will not create new taxes but rather would replace levies that are set to expire.
In many districts, the levy dollars represent 16 percent of the operating budget and help pay for things such as special education, gifted student programs, technology, counseling, textbooks and extracurricular activities.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. today. For information on where to vote, residents should call their county elections offices. In Spokane County, the number is 477-2320.
