Queen Down Under
When Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia in 1954, crowds lined the streets waving British flags wherever she went and thousands welcomed her at parties. A more muted reception is likely today when she begins her 13th visit to what began as a British penal colony in 1788. The two-week tour comes just four months after Australians voted to not dump her and make Australia a republic. Polls, however, show most Aussies want their own head of state, but cannot agree on how to choose one. Her visit will serve as a strong reminder that Australia’s top official is a foreigner living on the other side of the world. Learn more at: www.royal.gov.uk or www.republic.org.au.
