Lewis-Clark St. Ko’D Despite Erickson’S 34

Mianda Watts totaled 40 points and 18 rebounds Saturday to lead Findlay (Ohio) to an 86-65 win over Lewis-Clark State in the NAIA women’s basketball national quarterfinals.

Watts scored all of the points during an 18-8 run in the game’s final 8 minutes. Findlay (27-3) plays in the semifinals on Monday.

Alyssa Erickson, out of WilburCreston, scored 34 points and had seven rebounds for the Warriors (28-2), who were eliminated.

Track and field

Ian Waltz added a discus title to the shot put title he won Friday, leading Washington State’s effort at the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

Waltz’s throw of 197 feet, 2 inches automatically qualified him for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

WSU’s Andrea Thornton broke her school record in the hammer throw, with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 184-4. She finished second in the event.

Other Cougars winners were: Mandy Borschowa, women’s discus, 159-5; Arend Watkins, men’s high hurdles, 13.74 seconds; and Demetrius Murray, men’s long jump, 23-6-1/4.

North Idaho’s Nathan Keith won the shot put and discus during the Dusty Lane Open at Spokane Community College.

Keith qualified for nationals with a personal-best throw of 168-6 in the discus. His shot put was 53-1-3/4.

NIC’s Joe Woodske qualified for nationals with a second-place 171-10 in the hammer throw.

Julie Demarni of the Cardinals threw 127-4 to place second in the women’s javelin and qualify for nationals. Four other Cardinals also qualified for nationals.

Eastern Washington’s Kurt Kraemer won the men’s long jump and triple jump. Sarah Axley of Pacific Lutheran won the women’s 100 and 200.

Western Washington senior Sarah Hiss, out of Lewis and Clark High, won the women’s long jump.

Hiss jumped 18-10-1/2, a personal best and the third-best mark in school history. The mark was also a provisional national qualifier.

David Stoddard, competing unattached, won the men’s high hurdles and placed second in the intermediate hurdles.

Crew

Gonzaga’s men won all four races and Washington State’s women won three of the four during the Fawley Cup Regatta on Long Lake.

GU’s men won every race on the 2,000-meter course by at least 2 seconds. WSU’s women were on their way to a sweep until GU won the varsity 4.

Swimming

Whitworth’s Brent Rice placed 12th in the 200-yard butterfly during the final day of the NCAA Division III championships at Emory University in Atlanta.

Whitworth finished 27th in the team race. Kenyon (Ohio) College won its 21st consecutive title.
