Five years ago: Palestinian gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying Jewish settlers, killing two people. After a 21-month hiatus, Michael Jordan returned to professional basketball with his former team, the Chicago Bulls.

One year ago: At a White House news conference, President Clinton prepared the nation for airstrikes against Serbian targets following the collapse of Kosovo peace talks in Paris. A powerful bomb shattered an outdoor food market in Vladikavkaz, Russia, killing at least 53 people.
