Lind

County Commissioner Bill Wills will seek a fourth term in order to see the Waste Management landfill built near Washtucna. The issue has been simmering since Wills first took office. He sees the landfill as a good money maker that would bring about $300,000 into county coffers annually. Wills says he’d like to see the money go toward senior centers, among other issues.

Ferry County

Shoshana Cooper is a national finalist for the Bronfman Youth Fellowship, a special study program in Israel. Only 26 Jewish students from the United States and Canada will be chosen to study and travel the Holy Lands in this all-expenses-paid program. She made the finals due to her leadership, character and academics.

Grant County

Ephrata

As of Wednesday, the East and West Low irrigation canals will be filled to serve farmers in Ephrata, Moses Lake, Warden, Quincy and Othello. Farm water deliveries begin about April 1 with delivery available to most areas by at least April 10. Irrigation season opens Tuesday in the southern part of the county, including the Potholes area and Mattawa.

Davenport

Students having trouble in a normal classroom setting are now enrolling in a special program at the Davenport School. The district, after losing several students to alternative high schools in Spokane, has set up its own alternative education program. Teacher Lynn Hein meets with five students once each week and issues weekly assignments. Students must log at least 25 hours weekly in homework and record a minimum of 75 hours to pass the class. Only one class can be taken at a time.

The state Employment Security Department’s latest data show an unemployment rate of 10 percent, or 420 of the eligible county labor force of 4,180, for January. The county employment rate had fallen to 7.2 percent in November and 8.4 percent in December.

The 49 Degrees North Ski Stars, a seven-member ski team, recently competed in the downhill skiing competition of the state Special Olympics. Over 350 athletes took part. Representing the county were Cody Fair-weather, Ashlie and Becky Morey, Eric Colvin, Misty Finafrock, Jeff Fox and Colt Snow.

The Pullman Chamber of Commerce’s annual cabaret auction, dinner and dance is Saturday. This year’s theme is “Americana” and a yellow 1928 Ford Model A Roadster is on the auction block. It was donated to the chamber and the Friends of Gladish Community Center by Kevin and Sue Kirkman of Pullman. The chamber and Gladish will divide the winning bid for the vehicle, on display at Pullman Ford Mercury. Tickets are $47.50 each. St. Maries

Boyds Furniture will close April 1 after seven years in business. Owners Clyde and Sharon Boyd moved to St. Maries and opened an appliance repair business in 1991 and the furniture store in 1993. The Boyds will focus on their second furniture store in Colville, Wash.

Sandpoint

Safety and Police Officers Retired to Sandpoint (SPORTS), a social group of about 60 men, elected new officers at its last meeting. Robert Marshall was elected president, Ed Gould vice president and Waid Woodruff secretary. The group meets the first Tuesday of each month at Slates Restaurant in Ponderay.

Bonners Ferry

Three Bonners Ferry High School seniors will be recognized for their academic achievements at the 2000 graduation ceremony. Dean Stonehocker was named valedictorian with a 4.0 grade-point average; Kayla Howlett and Rosie Samter were both named salutatorians with GPAs of 3.85.

Sandpoint High senior Jason Moody will perform at the fund-raising concert “A Salute to Music.” Moody began playing violin when he was 5 years old. The Troy Recreation Outreach for Youth Board recently hired Josh Paparazzo as program director for this summer’s activities. Paparazzo is a student in outdoor recreation at the University of Idaho and has recreational experience with the Eggan Youth Center in Moscow.

Dr. Robert J. Burnett was chosen to be a life member of “The National Registry of Who’s Who” for his service to the community and his profession. Burnett and a group of medical missionaries plan to travel with Operation Blessing to Havana for a week in June.

Libby

The Environmental Protection Agency will begin its second round of testing for asbestos contamination at 35 area homes. The first tests covered 32 homes. About 150 homes will be tested altogether. The results of the first tests are expected this week and will be announced during a town meeting.
