Adams County Othello

Money problems may hit the Othello Library. It’s funded by the city and county, with the county paying $49,113 of the $205,000 budget. Because of Initiative 695 cutbacks, the county is considering opting out of the agreement.

Ferry County Republic

More signs of spring: On March 11, the snow stake at the local weather station registered no snow. Two days earlier, the week’s high temperature of 50 degrees was registered.

Grant County Electric City

A piece of lakefront property will likely be annexed by Electric City. Owners of the Skydeck Motel site and other recreation businesses have signed a petition to be annexed.

Lincoln County Davenport

Editor Katy Hedgcock is leaving the Davenport Times for a writing job at the Spokane Food Bank.

Pend Oreille County Diamond Lake

County commissioners will wait another two weeks before deciding whether to approve the filling of Dick and DeAnna Wilson’s lakefront property. The county Planning Commission denied their fill request in January. They applied for a shorelines substantial development permit after dumping the 400 cubic feet of sand and dirt - which extends 20 feet into the water. The Wilsons wanted to level out their property for landscaping purposes. The Diamond Lake Improvement Association board opposes the permit.

Spokane County Spokane

Habitat for Humanity-Spokane last week dedicated its 73rd and 74th homes in the Spokane area for two more low income families. The two latest residences are at the Liberty View development southeast of Liberty Park.

Stevens County Nine Mile Falls

The Lakeside High School staff will play the Lakeside Middle School staff for donkey basketball bragging rights Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the high school gym. The donkeys will be wearing special rubber shoes, and the riders will don headgear as they shoot hoops for charity. Tickets are available by calling (509) 466-1369.

Whitman County Pullman

WSU is temporarily realigning several administrative assignments in anticipation of restructuring under President-elect Lane Rawlins. Searches for vice provost for enrollment management, admissions director and registrar have been put on hold. Institutional Research Director Jim Rimpau will assume the enrollment post, overseeing the offices of admissions, registrar, financial aid and student affairs research. Dean of Students George Bettas will oversee the office of campus life, the CUB, university recreation, student health and the counseling and testing service. Alton Jamison will be appointed to vice provost for educational development, overseeing the student advising and learning center, career services, residence life and student publications.

IDAHO

Benewah County Plummer

Lakeside High School teacher Brad Veile recently was awarded a $1,000 grant from the Idaho Humanities Council. The grant will enable Veile to travel Europe’s “Holocaust Sites Tour 2000,” which is part of an Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Center initiative.

Bonner County Sandpoint

The East Bonner County Library District board of directors recently approved a bid by Able Computers of Kirkland, Wash., for computers and printers. Able will supply 55 computers for $47,085. Data Day Computers of Sandpoint will supply three new printers for $4,245. The board also approved a library logo designed by Bonner County artist Bonnie Shields and the hiring of a bookmobile coordinator/driver/ librarian.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of the Census has opened a questionnaire assistance center to help residents fill out their questionnaires at the University of Idaho Cooperative Extension office, 2-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays through April 14.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Beneficial pruning methods for landscaping trees will be taught by Tim Kastning, owner of Grace Tree Service. The class will be held 7-9 p.m. Monday at the University of Idaho Kootenai County Extension office, 106 E. Dalton Ave. Registration is $5. Call 667-6426 for more information..

Latah County Moscow

Robert Wrigley, an English professor at the University of Idaho and author of “Reign of Snakes” poetry collection, is the winner of the eighth annual Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. Wrigley will receive a $50,000 award April 26 at a ceremony in Los Angeles.

Shoshone County Pinehurst

Dr. Michael J. Claymore and his dental office staff are donating their time to apply dental sealant to all second graders at Canyon, Pinehurst and Sunnyside elementary schools, according to Mary Jo Sauber, a dental hygienist for the Panhandle Health District. The sealant protects the surfaces of the back teeth and acts as a barrier to plaque and acid. The project was coordinated by the Idaho State Dental Association, the Idaho State Dental Hygiene Association and Panhandle Heath District.

Lincoln County Libby

Elaine Forrest, currently principal of Wolf Point High School, was chosen as principal at Libby High School beginning next fall. Chosen from eight finalists, she will succeed Tom Pannell. Pannell submitted his resignation in August after serving two years.
