Three Teens Thrown From Bed Of Pickup

From Staff

Three Deer Park teenagers were seriously injured Tuesday after their pickup struck two power poles and rolled behind the city’s high school, according to the Spokane Sheriff’s Office.

The teenagers were riding in the bed of a 1965 Chevrolet pickup driven by a 17-year-old male around 2:30 p.m., traffic investigators said.

Witnesses said the truck was traveling at 50 to 60 mph on a dirt road that runs through the woods behind the school. The road is known as the “high school trail.”

As the truck came to a “T” intersection, it left the trail due to its speed and defective brakes, according to the sheriff’s office. The truck hit two power poles and rolled onto its side.

The driver and two other teens in the cab were wearing seat belts and were not injured.

The three teens in the bed of the truck were ejected. They were taken to Holy Family Hospital. One boy, 17, was listed in serious condition with a broken pelvis, elbow and arm. Another boy, 16, was listed in serious condition with severe facial injuries. The third boy, 18, was being treated for hip and leg injuries.

The teens’ names were unavailable Tuesday.

Deputies said alcohol and drugs were not involved in the accident.
