Habitat Completes Two More Homes

Habitat for Humanity-Spokane has handed over the keys to two new homes for low-income families on the South Side.

At a dedication last Friday, members of the Duong Duong and Jane Pettibone families gathered with volunteers and friends to mark the occasion in a dedication ceremony.

“Each family diligently worked over 500 `sweat equity’ hours for Habitat to help earn their houses,” according to a press release.

The two new homes are adjacent to each other in a type of duplex in which each owner holds title to half of the building and its lot.

They are part of the Liberty View addition at Sixth and Pittsburg next to Liberty Park.

Becky Schmidt, spokeswoman for Habitat, said another duplex at Liberty View is nearing completion. Liberty View is a planned unit development with room for six duplexes and 12 homes.

The Duong and Pettibone residences are the seventh and eighth in the development to be completed.

Another duplex is under construction there. The sixth duplex has also been started.

Liberty View is the first medium-size housing development undertaken by Habitat. Its first units opened last June.

Habitat, which relies on volunteers and donations from the community, has completed 74 homes in the Spokane area over its 12-year history.

Habitat is a worldwide organization with an ecumenical mission to eliminate substandard housing.

Its goal is to provide simple, decent housing through no-interest loans to families selected for the program. The organization was founded in Americus, Ga., in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller.

The East Central neighborhood is home to more than a dozen Habitat residences.
